When it comes to redeeming your credit card points, there are a multitude of ways you could go about redeeming them. However, credit card points aren’t easy to come by, and it is imperative that you make sure you are redeeming your points in such a way that you are attaining the best value possible for your points.
Depending on your credit card issuer, the ways in which you can use your points vary. You could redeem your points for cash back, redeem them at specific stores, transfer to airline and hotel partners, etc.
In my opinion, the best way to redeem your points is by transferring to hotel or airline partners. For example, I recently saved $1,000+ on hotel stays in Japan by transferring my Chase points to Hyatt, which is known for its high-value redemptions.
To stretch the value of your points even further, I recommend waiting for transfer bonus opportunities, if you can. Credit card issuers such as Chase and Capital One will often run transfer bonus promotions, allowing you to unlock award redemptions for fewer points.
Transfer Partners
Each credit card issuer will have a variety of airline and hotel partners you can transfer your points to, and no one issuer will have the same exact list of partners. Here’s the list of transfer partners available by credit card issuer:
Chase Transfer Partners
Capital One Transfer Partners
American Express Transfer Partners
Citi Transfer Partners
Bilt Rewards Transfer Partners
Wells Fargo Transfer Partners
While there are a number of programs that are shared across multiple credit card issuers, there are a select few niche programs that are unique to only one credit card company. These programs are:
- Capital One to Finnair Plus
- American Express to ANA Mileage Club
- Citi to EVA Air Infinity MileageLands
- Citi to Thai Airways Royal Orchid Plus
- Citi to Leaders Club
- Citi to Preferred Hotels & Resorts
- Bilt Rewards to Japan Airlines Mileage Bank
- Bilt Rewards to Alaska Airlines
Ongoing Point Transfer Bonuses
If you’re flexible with your travel and you want to book your travel using points, I recommend waiting to see if you can snag a deal with transfer bonuses. Transfer bonuses can change frequently, so it is advisable to check every once in a while to see if an optimal bonus is available.
Ongoing Transfer Bonuses
Credit Card Issuer | Transfer Partner | Bonus | End Date |
---|---|---|---|
American Express | Avianca LifeMiles | 15% transfer bonus | July 31, 2025 |
Chase | Marriott Bonvoy® | 50% transfer bonus | August 15, 2025 |
Citi | Leaders Club | 25% transfer bonus | August 23, 2025 |
It is worth noting that the credit card issuers who run point transfer bonuses most often are Chase, American Express, and Citi.
Bilt also usually runs transfer bonuses on the first day of every month in a monthly promotion called Bilt Rent Day. Bilt Rent Day often includes transfer bonuses to select airline and hotel partners, with the bonus amount depending on your Bilt Elite status.
For example, on Bilt Rent Day April 2025, Bilt offered a transfer bonus of up to 100% on British Airways Executive Club, Aer Lingus AerClub, and Iberia Plus.
However, Bilt Rent Day July 2025 didn’t include a transfer bonus as part of the promotion.
Capital One occasionally runs transfer bonuses, but not as often as Citi, American Express, or Chase.
Wells Fargo recently launched the ability to transfer points to partners in April 2024 but has yet to offer a transfer bonus.
How to Take Advantage of Transfer Bonuses
The best way to take advantage of transfer bonuses is to be flexible with your travel plans. If you can wait around for transfer bonuses to possibly become available, you might be lucky enough to come across a bonus that works with your travel plans.
I’ve been able to take advantage of transfer bonuses a couple of times. Most recently, I was able to utilize Chase’s transfer bonus to Air Canada Aeroplan to save points on booking a United Airlines flight from San Francisco to Los Angeles.
One of my best redemptions using a transfer bonus was in April 2024. At the time, Chase was running a 25% transfer bonus to Air France KLM Flying Blue. On top of that, Flying Blue’s monthly award fare promotions for April 2024 included Boston, which is my home airport.
I combined the 25% transfer bonus and the monthly award fare promotion to save thousands of points on flights from Boston to Europe. I was able to book Air France business class for 50,000 Flying Blue miles, but with the 25% transfer bonus, I only needed to transfer 40,000 points from Chase. This is an incredible redemption for transatlantic business class.
However, it is important to remember that you should only transfer your points if there is an award redemption available for you to redeem. Speculative point transfers are risky, as there is no guarantee that there will be availability for you to book the redemptions you are seeking.
Point transfers are irreversible with very few exceptions. If you transfer your points speculatively, you will be stuck using the points with the loyalty program you transferred your points to, instead of having flexibility with your credit card issuer.
You might also be subject to rules regarding your points, depending on the loyalty program you transferred your points to. For example, your Air Canada Aeroplan miles will expire if you have no activity in your account for 18 months.
You should only transfer your points if you are ready to redeem them immediately. I highly discourage speculative point transfers, even if there is an enticing transfer bonus.
Final Remarks
When it comes to maximizing the value of your credit card points, strategic transfers to airline and hotel partners are often your best bet, especially when combined with transfer bonuses. These promotions can unlock incredible travel deals, helping you book premium flights and hotel stays for fewer points.
However, timing and planning are key. Always ensure that your desired award availability exists before initiating a transfer, as most transfers are irreversible. While it can be tempting to jump on a great bonus, speculative transfers can leave you with stranded points in a program you may not use.
By staying informed about ongoing transfer bonuses and maintaining flexibility in your travel plans, you can stretch your points further and travel in style for less.
